But I believe I see the reason why you want PNGs: When the uploaded file is resized to a pretty small size (for some kind of template) and then gets compressed as JPG by MediaWiki since the original uploaded file was in this format too, it might not look very good because of the artifacts. Is my guess right, is that the reason for PNGs? A possible solution would be to configure MediaWiki to make it compress resized JPGs at a higher quality setting, for example 80 oder 85 instead of 70 or 75 or so.
