::You could try GIMP as an alternative, but I haven't used it in a while, so I'm not sure how to do it on GIMP. As for your second question, I wrote my guide based on HGSS, so now that I moved on to extracting sprites in Platinum, I encountered the same problem as you - the black background. Changing the background requires some knowledge of ROM hacking.
